I meant to post this...ummm....about three months ago. I found the comments after the story most interesting. It seems that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I've always been disturbed by that familiar cop-out argument that people have used to express their opinion about interracial relationships. It seems to start with the disclaimer of, "I don't have anything against it," followed by, "but I worry for the children and how people will treat them." I find it an attempt to spare themselves of the responsibility of perpetuating negativity and seating it at the feet of "society". Something about that always made me want to ask them, "Then, why don't you do something about it when you witness it being done?"

With further ado, the link!

  • I could care less what people think about the relationship I have with my husband. They don't have to live my life... but we recently put our kiddos in daycare. One of our concerns has been how they will be accepted/treated by the other non-mixed children. So far, so good. But my husband and I are very aware that we can't control other people, outside influences, and so we have to be ready to deal with insensitive comments or issues that the little ones may face. I guess we'll simply have to deal with that when the time comes though. They're still fairly young.

As for the trend... I think that one good point they made was during the part about how the Asian women felt about the Asian men... that culturally they were "sexist and patriarchal" and to me that hits the nail right on the head: the main issue people have with "inter-racial" marriages/relationship is more of a CULTURE issue than a RACE issue, as there are more differences between cultures than there are in genetic make-up.

    But maybe that's just me????
