I hear you on that. At the end of the day, I find that black is a skin color and not a nationality or identity. Unfortunately, people have placed/received so much baggage with it that something apparently so concrete is often made more complicated by conflating identity and nationality with it.

I often wonder if that influences people when addressing identity to use mixed elements (no pun intended) like 'black and French' instead of using each parent's country of origin. In the case of monocultural parental background, then the element of skin color could be effective. Mixing the two always seemed odd to me. Somewhat like saying water is 'liquid and oxygen' instead of 'hydrogen and oxygen'. Not quite perfect, but it's early! ;)

Thanks for adding your post! Come around more often! :)

Black? Like many of us, Barak Obama is a mulatto mix of MANY races and nationalities. I think that is one of the most appealing things about him. I can understand how we are seen as "black" men. But we are more correctly, simply "not white". And it is about time for a "person of color", if that term is considered PC these days.

To answer the question, for me anyway, only obliquely.

Hey, Philip! How are you?

That's a good question. Right now, if Obama makes it into the Oval Office, he would be shedding light on *everything* simply from the sheer fact of his existence! His prominence in the American forefront further defines and enriches the biracial and interracial experience in America. So, whether directly or indirectly, sure he will. I do hope that the media won't focus on it forever. :)

I must say I do enjoy seeing him and his family together. He and Michelle are a power couple to top power couples.

May the best team win! Take care!

It's a good thing that we've got a a bold, upstanding man such as Obama campaigning hard for the seat of the Presidency, and I know that there's lots of us in here who would love nothing more than to see a Black U.S. President happen in our time.

But here's a question: would it be folly to say that Obama's Presidency would do a lot more in shedding more bright light into the legitimacy of interracial marriages or not?
