So, I'm having a conversation with someone of another color (if you must know, yes, they were white) and they proclaim their hometown as "super liberal and progressive". I ask about the level of diversity and they say that it is basically 90% white and 10% divided amongst everyone else. Of course, I imagine that when there is so few of anyone else around, it's easy to talk the talk, although harder when it comes time to walk it. Must be the urban prince in me.
They continued spouting the virtues of their utopian hometown (and I'm beginning to wonder to myself, "Why are they here then?") when they say something about living in Heavenville (my name for their hometown) is great for the "ethnics"" because the "[they] haven't had a chance to isolate themselves yet".
I ask them to explain and the response soon spirals into oblivion with comments about Chinatown and xenophobia and blah blah blah. The entire time, I wondered if this person had an opportunity to view it from any other viewpoint other than a white one. Soon after, they bid me a hasty farewell and I noted that we'd have to continue the convo at another time.
Yeah, right. :)
It's always surprising to find people that think in such a me" kind of way. Does it happen much to anyone else? Am I missing something?

Re: Ever feel like a dummy magnet?
Mon, December 26, 2005 - 8:17 PMMy feelings and thoughts have dominated my life, so rigidly that even today I cannot diverge from the traditional belief in Humanity. What is this talk of race, What Race.?
In my previous post also I had asked a question-- Why does Color matter so much amongst us Human? What is basically our race?
All this talk on color, white and black has left me confused, and I find it hard to refocus and rearrange my thoughts, as I start to wonder:~ If I am a HUMAN or not, Do I belong to HUMAN RACE or not? Its wierd.
Hence Today I ask all the member of this tribe: ARENT BLACK HUMANS, HUMAN AT ALL? ARE THEY REALLY DIFFERENT? If so please have the courage to explain HOW DIFFERENT THEY ARE FROM WHITE?

Hmm...this is ahrd one Joe... the way *I* see it..Yes, black folks ARE human....furthermore... the way black folks differ from white folks.... they have more pigment in their skin...
See...I'm Celtic...Irish/Scott...pure 50/50... and I have almost NO pigment in MY skin...'cuz..my people come from a land of fog and rain... sun is fairly rare... my people didn't need a lot of pigment to process the sun's exposure to their skin... whereas with black folks originating in a land of sun and heat... well, nature, god, whomever... created them with oodles and oodles of pigment in their skin... to deal with all that sun exposure they had to deal with.
*sigh* Now I'm exhausted from all of this scientific intercourse.....
Seriously... skin colour has to do with nothing more than what I've posted.... as to why folks get hung up on it... seems to me lots o'ignant white folks think black folks carry the mark of Cain... OOOOHHH RIIIIIGGGHHHT.... now good old Heysuse is the instigater of racism????
Whatever... truth be know all folks ARE equal...equally stupid, shallow, judgemental, etc. Maybe we should all become flowers instead??

Re: Ever feel like a dummy magnet?
Mon, January 2, 2006 - 3:14 AMWell, as I get older I begin to understand.
The questions you ask, while philosophical and worthwhile as they stand,
are rhetorical really.
Here's my theory:
The bottom line to most of our problems begin because of our individual
unwillingness to experience emotional pain, which then leads to a "reactive"
behavior and habit pattern so as to deny and be averse to anything that touches upon those areas of unaddressed emotional baggage.
Ultimately our slothful emotional behavior and the habit patterns that develop from then evolve into "ways of thinking" which at some level is about control.
Control environment, resources, other people. This is how protect our fragile egos. If we find enough others of like mind, we either become leaders or followers. And this can happen when we have healthy egos, the consequences are just not destructive.
Leaders and followers brings up the element of "society" as a construct. As the society grows it becomes necessary to delineate who belongs to our circle and who doesn't. This is segration mentality and it is the precursor of politics.
My connotation of politics is merely the action of a select group or groups within a society to impose their control (or will if you prefer) upon those not of the same circle (definitely), but at some point upon even those within the circle.
The scale of ego-protection, as I call it, is limitless. Thus we develop massive
groups of humans segregating other groups on the basis of some inane classifications based on snap-judgements and resents developed from bad experiences satisfying those snap judgements.
For me, judging the character of another human based on the color of their outer epidermal layer is as unreasonable as making the judgement based on
the color of their tongue, or kidney, liver or lungs.
Our physical adaptations, based on ancestral environment does not define us
as living beings. Only the most ignorant of us could make that logic feasable.
This being said, the truth is that many, many, many humans are ignorant and have chosen it over truth and the pain that sometimes develops from knowing deeply into the heart. We must deal with those people and the safety that segregative behavior brings them. We can educate them by example. And for those who chose to remain ignorant...well, the THEORY
of evolution may have relevance where they are concerned.

Re: Ever feel like a dummy magnet?
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 9:44 AMI had a similar experience on one of my My Space groups;
a young lady asked for info as to why she should move to my hometown and another asked why my hometown university was the one to choose. Both got wonderful info from the, ever so diverse, white representation about how diverse the population is here, but they did not go into the details of how separate it really is here. I sent one a note privately with some REAL info a young black professional needs to know before moving here. It hurts to do so, 'cause I love my town, but I am a white girl and the experience is very different for me. Sometimes, I think that I am one of the few that recognizes that...
