I'm from the Bay Area in Cali so you see all different types of couples walking around. I think in general it's look at as not a big deal. But, even here you get you're closed minded people.
    • Yes . But since it is so common those people tend not to let their feelings be known. I've lived in the BA all my life so I'm a bit spoiled. When I travel I do have to remember to check things out first. Also I'm pagan and do renfaires so I've learned to find out the lay of the land first :)

      • from what I have seen in my "eternally long" life so far, there are all kinds of people everywhere.

But I do agree, bay area is so liberal and awesome when compared to say, rural Alabama ! but thing is, even in bay area we would have a small percentage of close minded people and even in rural alabama we would have some liberal minded people.

yeah ... everyone is like "Duh ... thanks for that Einstein" !! just trying to make myself be present in this tribe through my retarded rants, thats all ! :-)

lol what you say is relivant. Never dis your own views.

It is tru that there are close minded people everywhere... even with those who say they don't have issues with it there is a % of them who still look at you when you are not pay attention and wonder.... WHY.......

But true happiness is just moving on and not being concerned about what the closed-minded say. I put my time forth to make my family happy. My son doesn't need to live in negativity. I raise him to never see the difference in how people look and not to judge on how people are JUST on how they treat you.

Hawaii County (the Big Island of) Hawaii is, according to the census bureau, THE most racially diverse county in the U.S. The largest single racial bloc might be around 30%, and somewhere around 21% of people here checked multiple ethnicities on the last census. In the city I live in (Hilo), that figure was 29.7%. Soooo... I have to stop and think about how many couples I know here who *aren't* interracial. :)

Of course, when so many people are so many things themselves, it's a little blurrier. I'm white, my wife's black, so we're an interracial couple... but what about someone who's Portuguese/Hawaiian/Chinese, with a partner who's Black/Brazilian/Tahitian? Got all kinds... :)
  • I live a little south of Houston Texas ("George Bush country"). It's not too bad in the city. Some older people will give a couple a look especially if the guy is Black and is with a nice looking White lady. In the small towns and out in the boonies it's a different story. I've never felt physically threatened but I never got that "warm fuzzy feeling" either. It's definitely not like Cali or New York. I think if it was more accepted you'd see more of it here.
    • I lived in Austin from 1985-1992 and I dated only black men. I didn't experience any problems at all. I think the IR scene was at its height in 1990 (the time my son was born, yes he's Biracial) and since that time it's only escalated. I really think it depends on where you are and what attitude you portray.
      • Pira you are absolutely right Austin is a world apart from East Texas. It's funny how even UT and Texas A&M have different cultures. Austin is even more liberal than Houston in my opinion and I don't know why that is?? I can only speculate that maybe it's the college's liberal tradition but it's also the center of state government and we know who controlls that now. In any event I love Austin it's a partying town (no wonder the Bush girls used to get hammered there).

Interracial couples are extremely common in Montreal seeing as the city is made up of various cultures besides White French Canadian. Most people don't really comment on it but funnily enough when it is noticed, you get looks from your own people. Like when I was with my ex and we'd be walking downtown, Black men would be givin' some dirty looks. More so towards him. Then they'd look at me be like 'what are you doin?'. Please!! Same thing Black men have been doing for years: branching out. It's just less common to see a Black woman with a White man. I ain't mad at them. Love is blind and that includes color..........

We live in a north Atlanta suburb and have honestly never had an incident or raised eyebrow. Granted, i tend to be sort of oblivious to that sort of thing. And we live in Cumming Georgia ( a looong time ago Oprah did a show on Cumming as being the most racist place in america, though i'm not sure why). Although to tell you the truth we probably get more shade when we are in mosly black situations.
  • I live in small town upstate NY. I only know one interracial couple in the whole city. My friend says her kids get picked on at school. Which really sucks. I lived in Phoenix for many years, and it was very ethnically diverse there. Now I am living back to where I grew up. Wonder bread, America.
